<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I believe everyone is back in school now. This summer, I've been compiling a list of new games and resources that I have added or want to add to my speech room. Some of these may be new to you; others may be products you already love! These are listed in no particular order, though they may include affiliate links for your convenience. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Resource Books:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. <b>Retro Toddler: More Than 100 Old-School Activities to Boost Development by Anne H. Zachry. </b> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is a great book written by an occupational therapist. I was excited to receive a copy of this book so I could integrate some of these suggested activities into my therapy sessions with my little friends. I think this could be a great resource for those starting out in early intervention, but also for parents. It is a very easy read and is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. </div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. <b>Thirty Million Words: Building a Child's Brain by Dana Suskind</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I originally bought this book for myself when I found out I was pregnant. As a speech-language pathologist, I knew it was important to boost her language early and have conversations with her. I thought this book would be a great addition to my personal library. Turns out, this book is a great one for my professional library as well. This is another great recommendation for parents to read. It can help shape the way they speak to their children! Interesting tidbit--it is written by a pediatric surgeon who worked with patients with cochlear implants! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. <b>Overcoming Dyslexia by Sally Shaywitz</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I first purchased this book to read with my co-workers in a book study. It has been such great foundational information about what dyslexia actually is that I have now integrated it as part of my graduate student training program. My state just passed some significant legislation regarding dyslexia, so I want to be ready myself and want my students to be prepared for when they enter the job market. This is another great one to recommend to parents who are just starting on this journey as well. </div>

1. <b>Help Me Be Good Series </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This series was introduced to me by the BCBAs that I work with. These are great books for targeting social skills. They have been a good way for me to target social skills AND reading comprehension with one of my clients. I want to add these to my personal library! I have used the following books: </div>

Games:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. <b>Super Genius-Reading 1</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is such a fun game that is similar to Spot It. Ever since I received it a few weeks ago from Blue Orange Games, my clients have been asking to play it. I love that it targets sight words (Dolch words) because several of my clients are working on them. It makes for easy planning on my part since they enjoy it so much! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TSHF37Q/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00TSHF37Q&linkCode=as2&tag=homesweetspee-20&linkId=ab6d8a7fcd23f31744d28711375e431e" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&MarketPlace=US&ASIN=B00TSHF37Q&ServiceVersion=20070822&ID=AsinImage&WS=1&Format=_SL250_&tag=homesweetspee-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="//ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=homesweetspee-20&l=am2&o=1&a=B00TSHF37Q" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. <b>Fluxx</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ok I'll admit, Fluxx is not new to me. But it's new to almost everyone I talk to about it. I grew up playing this game. Now I'm using it in my speech room. This has been a great game for me to use to help my clients become more flexible. It is a game of ever-changing rules, so it's great for following directions as well! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OETKWCE/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00OETKWCE&linkCode=as2&tag=homesweetspee-20&linkId=55c8703ebad99c8a9169e85d398be621" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&MarketPlace=US&ASIN=B00OETKWCE&ServiceVersion=20070822&ID=AsinImage&WS=1&Format=_SL250_&tag=homesweetspee-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="//ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=homesweetspee-20&l=am2&o=1&a=B00OETKWCE" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
3. <b>Superfight</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
This game was introduced to me by one of the occupational therapists that I work with. It is a game of absurd arguments. This game allows kids to be creative and think critically about what attributes would be stronger than others. It is a great game to work on persuasion.<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E5QL2AC/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00E5QL2AC&linkCode=as2&tag=homesweetspee-20&linkId=67915f0bc94510fed9726c64ecd15ba1" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&MarketPlace=US&ASIN=B00E5QL2AC&ServiceVersion=20070822&ID=AsinImage&WS=1&Format=_SL250_&tag=homesweetspee-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="//ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=homesweetspee-20&l=am2&o=1&a=B00E5QL2AC" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. <b>Snake Oil</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is another great game for persuasion. One player is a customer and the rest are "salesmen." The salesmen are trying to convince the customer why he/she needs that product. It is a great way to work on describing objects as well. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M3A860G/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00M3A860G&linkCode=as2&tag=homesweetspee-20&linkId=6096b4eedb107f61c883f0e30dedbcdb" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&MarketPlace=US&ASIN=B00M3A860G&ServiceVersion=20070822&ID=AsinImage&WS=1&Format=_SL250_&tag=homesweetspee-20" /></a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="//ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=homesweetspee-20&l=am2&o=1&a=B00M3A860G" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> </div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
So you just accepted a job as an Early Intervention SLP. Maybe you're a CF just starting out. On the other hand, maybe you're a seasoned SLP making a career move. If you're using this summer to get prepared, here's a list of materials, outfit notes, and other necessities that you will need/want to get started.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Materials:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Bubbles. I haven't met a kid that didn't like bubbles! They are super motivating. </li>
<li>Blocks. Kids love to build towers and knock them over. There are a lot of language opportunities here. </li>
<li>Cars. </li>
<li>Dolls. There are so many pretend play opportunities here! </li>
<li>Pretend Food. There are also so many pretend play opportunities. </li>
<li>Play Doh. So many language opportunities here. </li>
<li>Books. Do I need to explain? There are SO many things you can target with books! </li>
<li>Anything in your clients' houses--this will allow for the parents to see activities and do them with their children later </li>
<li>iPad--there are a lot of great apps for EI/preschool-age kids. </li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Outfit:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Fun socks. You're likely going to be taking your shoes off in your clients' homes. Have some fun socks to wear! </li>
<li>Shoes that are easy to slip on and off. See above for the reason. </li>
<li>Clothes that are comfortable and easy to move around in. You never know where you will be sitting or what position you may end up in. </li>
<li>Change of clothes. It is more than likely that you will get something on your clothes somewhere along the way. You're going to need to change at some point and probably won't have time to run home or to the store. </li>
<li>Dress in layers. You will never know if a client's home is going to be hot or cold. </li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Other Necessities:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>A good mug that keeps hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold. You're going to be in and out of your car a lot, so keep your drink the correct temperature is important! </li>
<li>A good thermal lunch box and ice packs. Same reason as above. </li>
<li>Hand Sanitizer. You are going to encounter a lot of germs. Keep this handy! </li>
<li>Lysol wipes. Again, you're going to encounter a lot of germs. You're going to want to wipe everything down. </li>
<li>Mileage app. Track your miles for tax purposes!</li>
<li>A car charger. You will want to charge your phone/iPad while you're driving. </li>
</ul>
</div>

It started out as a set of cards, and now they have expanded to an app!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU_JsIY9XNcm-bHvgQ5dJFM3CMiq4Gky0op00kHyuvPSn656MZs4xk5cxKteI0CDgs55O7sZT92QtxReHGzHH1bI_PLuFmc64Z-YlykO7ue0_J8PmpvI5-1NZvY-xxvSQwLYWyirNP1Q/s1600/Lively+Letters+Promo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="996" data-original-width="1495" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjU_JsIY9XNcm-bHvgQ5dJFM3CMiq4Gky0op00kHyuvPSn656MZs4xk5cxKteI0CDgs55O7sZT92QtxReHGzHH1bI_PLuFmc64Z-YlykO7ue0_J8PmpvI5-1NZvY-xxvSQwLYWyirNP1Q/s640/Lively+Letters+Promo.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>What is it? </b></div>
<div>
Lively Letters is an innovative program created by an ASHA certified SLP that takes the letters of the alphabet and gives them each a character. The whole program is based on multi-sensory ways of learning phonemic awareness. There are images, hand/body cues, kinesthetic cues, mnemonic stories, and songs to go with each character. Pretty cool, right? You can find out more about the program and cards <a href="https://store.readingwithtlc.com/catalog/product/2bdac4622d80426d967f32498c3fa84a">here</a>. You can download <a href="http://readingwithtlc.com/free-samples.html">free samples</a> from them as well. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><a href="https://store.readingwithtlc.com/catalog/product/2bdac4622d80426d967f32498c3fa84a"><img border="0" data-original-height="260" data-original-width="584" height="177" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHCgVWE4v0GwB72AinOILrLuz5FbTtonqnsPd5ZFDXHoD4dW9hMs50xrzA0G0W7Q15ZnCo1OAI4XxV35339gyt-EBo4_f9JaIHlUaSSs7dNmDUQ6tSCqnGahKV3rQEZbL2B_gBw6T1tQ/s400/Screen+Shot+2018-02-26+at+8.31.57+AM.png" width="400" /></a></span></td></tr>

</tbody></table>
<div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Who is it for?</b></div>
</div>
<div>
Lively Letters is great for children with speech and language disorders, reading difficulties, dyslexia, and memory weaknesses. It is also great for children learning English as a second language. The targeted grades are preschool through 2nd grade. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>The App</b></div>
<div>
The new Lively Letters app uses the same cards and stories in three activities! Like the cards, the app also incorporates multi-sensory learning opportunities.<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first activity is Flashing. The Flashing activity is great for teaching the letters and sounds as well as practicing them. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcWs6kuwjG8PZaWOT8qsnyLjGKcx8mjaJTW7Nscn-jNpMgHLAiuUiw3WU4KhxdrqDeDaLjW8yGbqK3HHJEd4IoYgCuDipzDQeOoqQxRTZh7D5OIspuH4dzGFbGI6x2zISAjzJ1qNXivg/s1600/IMG_0277.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcWs6kuwjG8PZaWOT8qsnyLjGKcx8mjaJTW7Nscn-jNpMgHLAiuUiw3WU4KhxdrqDeDaLjW8yGbqK3HHJEd4IoYgCuDipzDQeOoqQxRTZh7D5OIspuH4dzGFbGI6x2zISAjzJ1qNXivg/s640/IMG_0277.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Click on the book icon to her the story read in English or Spanish. Click the music note icon to hear the song. Click on the lips icon to see a picture of a person making the sound with the hand cues. Click on the pencil icon to have the student write the letter. Click on the ear icon to hear the sound made. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The second activity is Tracking. In this activity, students will practice blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds. They can read words that the SLP gives them or they can spell a given word. They can also play the "Alien versus Human" game. Click on the alien if it is a nonsense word or click on the human if it's a real word. Click on the pencil icon to trace the letters. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp3fAahnU7m4PZ5ICA9oqD2-1iUNwtJVRzJhm5ByS-rbJg621rgrLhsjJVrat4ogXIm-X7m-CadktuEDWkqdFJOoSh3gprBrM7pypZOevtYL1vQBmg1zSISL_51J5BiK44yGELqlZCQg/s1600/IMG_0278.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp3fAahnU7m4PZ5ICA9oqD2-1iUNwtJVRzJhm5ByS-rbJg621rgrLhsjJVrat4ogXIm-X7m-CadktuEDWkqdFJOoSh3gprBrM7pypZOevtYL1vQBmg1zSISL_51J5BiK44yGELqlZCQg/s640/IMG_0278.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The last activity is Matching. This game is the traditional memory game, and it gives students another way to practice their letter/sound associations. It allows students to match all combinations of Lively letters to plain letters and uppercase to lowercase for maximal generalization. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_1fJ_ClJ6acSYh_E_1KWHY7sRGo9DdNNdNHJlvEyQd316BR3NHTvcYwX_dgQK9ob5OQO0gPYK120HcY8y8Tq78pvP9icA9wC9_Nd7AUrJiDTjiWFAW1eBw1FjwUFzsUqlJiBG5TIdwg/s1600/IMG_0270.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_1fJ_ClJ6acSYh_E_1KWHY7sRGo9DdNNdNHJlvEyQd316BR3NHTvcYwX_dgQK9ob5OQO0gPYK120HcY8y8Tq78pvP9icA9wC9_Nd7AUrJiDTjiWFAW1eBw1FjwUFzsUqlJiBG5TIdwg/s640/IMG_0270.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You can track the progress for each activity: </div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In summary, Lively Letters is a great research-based program created by an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist to target phonemic awareness. It makes blending, segmenting, and manipulating letters/sounds fun! The app has three fun and easy activities to supplement the program (or stand alone). My clients have really enjoyed the fun stories and songs that correspond with the letters. They keep asking to use it again and again and have even asked their parents to purchase it for them!<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you are interested in purchasing this app, it is typically available in the App Store for $24.99 at the time of this review. BUT, through March 12, 2018, the app is $5 off, so you can get it for $19.99. An affiliate link is below for your convenience. </div>

<br />
A brand new language app was released on Christmas Day called Dew Drop Academy. It was inspired by the flashcard system an occupational therapist created for a boy with autism spectrum disorder and developmental delays. I was given the opportunity to check it out, and I'm excited to share it with you.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivNxy-sFTaDC_RjNpPMQOh2Axy43eCTorGISi28ZX256jriQDpi9kSuLbT3DCX1B1pGvVlzfRRWZcuXPFGt_AB3p_uOZOj8z4RXqxMzx1OUeLtRllXeuCstOP0YdppsFvXMwGMc3378A/s1600/Menu.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="478" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivNxy-sFTaDC_RjNpPMQOh2Axy43eCTorGISi28ZX256jriQDpi9kSuLbT3DCX1B1pGvVlzfRRWZcuXPFGt_AB3p_uOZOj8z4RXqxMzx1OUeLtRllXeuCstOP0YdppsFvXMwGMc3378A/s640/Menu.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This app is designed to help children learn colors, shapes, numbers, letters, everyday objects, and high frequency words. Here's an important note from the developer of the app:<br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">"Dew Drop Academy's artificial intelligence constantly tracks how quickly the student is learning, and adjusts the difficulty up or down so that the student is never overly challenged nor finds it too slow. The application also reviews words the student has previously mastered to ensure long-term memory of each word. The teacher may review what words the student has learned, how quickly the student is learning each word, and the overall speed of learning."</span></span><br />
<br />
The first thing the app does is a quick assessment to determine where the child is. This is called a "Probe" under the data section. This is done periodically to measure generalization.<br />
<br />
Every activity is run the same way; they just have different targets. The screen will pop up one or more flashcards with the target (and other words/letters/numbers). The child will receptively identify the word spoken by the app. Here are a few examples:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCVujhLNtA-P30tejpS_tomv2r1wMTLWK-ZpAcE7_tfQgsNLjNlD6EeFuorGCxM-7Rgz1YEyWfMOoGO3lOiwcRMOL9TV21x0TQd8fRgfqvlYGgpslMG1k4ZAMeLm6viDPjnIrN926izw/s1600/ShapesPromo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="1024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCVujhLNtA-P30tejpS_tomv2r1wMTLWK-ZpAcE7_tfQgsNLjNlD6EeFuorGCxM-7Rgz1YEyWfMOoGO3lOiwcRMOL9TV21x0TQd8fRgfqvlYGgpslMG1k4ZAMeLm6viDPjnIrN926izw/s320/ShapesPromo.png" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI_QDnhWMhzpA1AK_5OcdCPzPlb9Id8CqJxUXTc85EqndFzmefwL2_kFcd6UvI1o6zcRC-1HuY1qzzIhIOCdk1SUw7y2n6abtPNLqzSPIxKLx8Z6SNNSvCrhwp-UvksTpXA5R4_8BVMQ/s1600/Sight4Promo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="1024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI_QDnhWMhzpA1AK_5OcdCPzPlb9Id8CqJxUXTc85EqndFzmefwL2_kFcd6UvI1o6zcRC-1HuY1qzzIhIOCdk1SUw7y2n6abtPNLqzSPIxKLx8Z6SNNSvCrhwp-UvksTpXA5R4_8BVMQ/s320/Sight4Promo.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Note-the app varies the font for the letters and words and the shape for each of the colors so that the child generalizes the word/letter/color. I really like this feature!<br />
<br />
The app will give positive reinforcement for you, such as "Alright!" "Yay," "Ya-hoo!" or "Way to go!" It also will give the children a chance to pop clouds to find Dewy, the dew drop, as a break in between activities. The dew drop will create fun cloud designs, such as the one below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5Zsz5-meQOV4gBDxM5sasfxPSUOLXfFyigVdjiceey8lHqGyk5dlObNFxNkqOMYO672d0S16jJ-_80iJ0aEafMC2tvK5aFaR3dnb2lZhS_zWhqPiyizbmpLw_t98qZLgeGSYG9YjGzg/s1600/Encouragement.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5Zsz5-meQOV4gBDxM5sasfxPSUOLXfFyigVdjiceey8lHqGyk5dlObNFxNkqOMYO672d0S16jJ-_80iJ0aEafMC2tvK5aFaR3dnb2lZhS_zWhqPiyizbmpLw_t98qZLgeGSYG9YjGzg/s320/Encouragement.png" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Another fantastic thing about this app is that it tracks data for you. The percentage that it gives is the percentage correct of the past five times that the child was asked that word. The second data point you will see is "Trials to Mastery." This is the number of times the child was asked to receptively label the object before the score was high enough to be considered mastered (80%).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVcHBjUO0B0q8IGJ-Xz_MxcRaKL7Bby7VZNOhekApPmrgD6-8vwAli949GLjtOHoh9E4YagkVvV1Wt6pE5mo8IytqVLO_WoYtzqxoDmcKvFyhkLdDrPLQ-BH50SPRPTnsNeQNR0M_jTQ/s1600/progress+report.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVcHBjUO0B0q8IGJ-Xz_MxcRaKL7Bby7VZNOhekApPmrgD6-8vwAli949GLjtOHoh9E4YagkVvV1Wt6pE5mo8IytqVLO_WoYtzqxoDmcKvFyhkLdDrPLQ-BH50SPRPTnsNeQNR0M_jTQ/s400/progress+report.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I would love to see a multi-player option. While this would work well for individual sessions, a lot of SLPs see children in groups. It also doesn't stop when a child achieves 80%. Let's say a child hits the 80% mastery criteria after 5 tries (4/5), I would think that the app would switch to another letter. Instead, it keeps going until all of the rainbow bars are filled in on the side of the screen. Yes, repetition is important. However, my clients who have mastered it get bored after awhile.<br />
<br />
Finally, an awesome thing about this app is that 10% of purchases are donated to charities to help kids with developmental delays!<br />
<br />
So in summary, Dew Drop Academy is a great app to work on receptive labeling of colors, numbers, shapes, letters, and high-frequency words. It uses a flashcard type system to elicit multiple repetitions per target. The app focuses on mastery and generalization. I also think this would be a great app for parents to use at home for practice (with consultation from the SLP of course).<br />
<br />
If you are interested in purchasing this app, it is available in the App Store. It is a FREE download with options to purchase the various activities. The activities range in price from $0.99 to $2.99. <br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
2017 was a big year for me, both personally and professionally. In January, I randomly selected the word "abundance" as my word of the year. I had no idea what that was going to mean/look like for me, but I was excited to find out. <div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
January turned out to be one of the hardest months of the year for us. We found out that I have polycystic ovarian syndrome, which meant we weren't sure how long our journey to parenthood would be. We also lost two people close to us, both unexpectedly. Not a great start for a year that was supposed to be about "abundance." </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Fast forward to March 17th, and we find out that we are expecting! What an incredible blessing. I was also dealing with a wide range of emotions: overjoyed that we were expecting and anxious about the health of the baby (my levels were low and miscarriages run in my family).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In May, we found out it was going to be a girl and that she had a strong heartbeat. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In June, I took on a new role at my job as a clinical supervisor. This was something that I had been preparing for for a long time, and I was excited to finally begin on this journey. I had a fantastic grad student who made it a very easy first semester of supervising! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This fall, I took a break from supervising grad students and took on yet another new role as a Clinical Fellowship mentor. This was another exciting adventure for me (one that I'm still on). It has challenged me (in a good way) and has also shown me how much you learn in a few short years out of grad school. It's amazing! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On Thanksgiving Day, we welcomed our daughter, Adeline Grace. We are so so so blessed.</div>

In December, we traveled so that Addy could meet all SIX of her living great-grandparents. She was a trooper. It was incredible watching them with her and seeing four generations present in one room, something that doesn't happen very often. </div>

<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
While setting up the game, you can choose the target sound for each child, the position of the sound, and the speed of the game. I usually choose slow, because I think those are fast the way they are. However, if your students/clients are up for a challenge, feel free to up the speed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLj9xMBR7oCYHMjUmVqxPuvFhRbqnv6AYVfSNlCGJiBXpKqOEpV2_n_S9lcnPbLdKhmrxVfC9rP8tESDczp_yVXLdkUSlHlLDLVaSrGTAJCpU65RRXKFoppWjcqS9vA2owkkDR2bNySA/s1600/IMG_0230.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLj9xMBR7oCYHMjUmVqxPuvFhRbqnv6AYVfSNlCGJiBXpKqOEpV2_n_S9lcnPbLdKhmrxVfC9rP8tESDczp_yVXLdkUSlHlLDLVaSrGTAJCpU65RRXKFoppWjcqS9vA2owkkDR2bNySA/s640/IMG_0230.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
On each person's turn, the app pops up a picture and shows a number of stars for the number of times the child is to say the word. The stars are filled in via voice activation. It is not always super sensitive or is overly sensitive, which can be frustrating to my clients. You can turn this off, though, so just monitor it in your sessions and see if you like it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4ZgSWTAJ5wiLZEqFglG-9IH2DSAtOOmlAG6DJwchhBOPSmE0cp2BVQsgfE9-mAZTaylO7cYxFjPUEapKmS3b-AhhISs5ZNd2TURtXNcm6Qa_5nmRsg8baawQcaoYo70bicOvSMu9rXQ/s1600/IMG_0231.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4ZgSWTAJ5wiLZEqFglG-9IH2DSAtOOmlAG6DJwchhBOPSmE0cp2BVQsgfE9-mAZTaylO7cYxFjPUEapKmS3b-AhhISs5ZNd2TURtXNcm6Qa_5nmRsg8baawQcaoYo70bicOvSMu9rXQ/s640/IMG_0231.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Once all of those stars are lit up, the game appears. The bubbles appear at the speed you chose earlier (slow, medium, fast). The students are working towards 50 jewels total. The object is to pop the bubbles of the word that the student just practiced. Every time they pop the correct picture, they receive a jewel. If they pop the wrong word, there is a consequence, and they begin to lose jewels.<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Once the child has received the 50 jewels, the game changes to a new land. There are nine lands in the game: sunken treasure, candy land, enchanted forest, pirate cove, beanstalk heaven, scorching desert, crystal beach, creepy forest, and magical sea. My clients have enjoyed seeing what land is next.<br />
<br />
Once you are done playing for the day, exit the game and save the data! This is a great way to monitor progress over various sessions as well.<br />

Overall, this app is a fantastic way to keep students engaged in articulation drill. It is an easy way to get I have used this app with clients of all ages, from 4 year olds to my 18 year olds. All of them have enjoyed playing it and exploring the different lands. They have all asked to play it again. It is definitely an articulation app that I will add to my regular rotation!<br />
<br />
If you are interested in purchasing this app, it is available on the app store for $5.99 at the time of this review:<br />

<br />
Inference Pics is a brand new app from Aptus Speech and Language Therapy. It is designed to target inferencing skills, a very important life skill. Many of my clients have goals for inferencing, so this app is great for my caseload. Check it out below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqdvNxV5v8tt3xjQR1vVzBIt5p81TEf9JOIZ_Eu_kqvTKrjvpar4ODDg6GGTdtGQ-LFG7HAXWwmGhZO5-GpYyA0ClMK_HoiZSydnVUvYxfXwJ0372jX9wKypY85DluoKMmECorIYJhhA/s1600/IMG_0208.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqdvNxV5v8tt3xjQR1vVzBIt5p81TEf9JOIZ_Eu_kqvTKrjvpar4ODDg6GGTdtGQ-LFG7HAXWwmGhZO5-GpYyA0ClMK_HoiZSydnVUvYxfXwJ0372jX9wKypY85DluoKMmECorIYJhhA/s400/IMG_0208.PNG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here is the description from the app developer:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">"<span style="text-align: center;">Inference Pics is designed to elicit verbal expression and target the ability to make inferences. It uses real-life pictures depicting events, conversations, thoughts, feelings, jobs, places and seasons. Inference Pics will get people talking, help them to foster key social skills and master the ability to make social inferences."</span></span></blockquote>

<br />
What I love about this app:<br />
-There are a variety of activities to practice inferencing skills.<br />
-You can target WH questions, pragmatics, turn-taking, and more with this app.<br />
-It takes data for you.<br />
-It uses real-life photos.<br />
-You can use as a guest or as a saved user.<br />
-It allows for scaffolding--clients can answer with or without answer choices.<br />
-It is super easy to use.<br />
<br />
What I would love to see in an update:<br />
-This is me being extremely picky, but I would love it if the app used a non-synthesized/digital voice. My clients generally respond better to a human voice.<br />
<br />
*Note: this app was produced in the United Kingdom. Some of the vocabulary used is not the same that I use in the United States. This is not a problem. Rather, it is just something to be aware of when using this<br />
<br />
In summary, Inference Pics is an easy-to-use app to practice inference skills along with WH questions, pragmatic language, turn-taking, and vocabulary skills. It uses real life photos, not cartoons, with help with carryover skills. The app takes data, which saves time for busy SLPs, and it has built in scaffolding and answer choices. <br />
<br />
If you're interested in this app, you can purchase it on the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/inference-pics/id1270407967?mt=8">App Store</a> for $11.99 at the time of this review. <br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">I absolutely love using books in therapy. I use them for my language clients all the time. Recently, I've begun exploring using them more with my articulation clients and my clients with CAS. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ5kFM6ZVCIFRLdyd9Q24VRqNila5XVeiRCdKIRuodPfWmRm3L8_LED7nBiiE_92UdfiVvy6DVJPcu-oC1z_o2QRlnBqc8nBUt4ezzs7lQs0Q0w0scFF-bR0RudxCfIlpwpOdvIHg1Aw/s1600/IMG_3999.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ5kFM6ZVCIFRLdyd9Q24VRqNila5XVeiRCdKIRuodPfWmRm3L8_LED7nBiiE_92UdfiVvy6DVJPcu-oC1z_o2QRlnBqc8nBUt4ezzs7lQs0Q0w0scFF-bR0RudxCfIlpwpOdvIHg1Aw/s640/IMG_3999.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I'm not really sure why I never thought about it before, but books are a great resource for CAS because they can be so repetitive and offer a lot of practice on given words. There is also quite a bit of research behind using books in therapy:</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">-children's books are highly predicable (Luckner, 1990)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">-books foster speech and language development (Chamberlain & Strode, 2004)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">-books allow children to fill-in the blanks without imitation, which can be challenging for children with CAS (Forrest, 2003)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">-repetitive books foster development of phonemic awareness and other pre-reading skills (Lovelace & Stewart, 2007)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Here's what we know about CAS, repetition, and literacy:</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">-children with CAS have decreased intelligibility, especially as the utterance gets longer (Forrest, 2003)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">-the more the child practices, the more automatic it becomes (Fletcher, 1995)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">-children with CAS have error inconsistency (Jacks, Marquardt, & Davis, 2006)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">-children with CAS are at risk for later language and literacy disorders (Lewis, Freebairn, Hansen, Iyengar, & Taylor, 2004)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Back in January, I wrote a post about my top 10 recommendations for repetitive books to use in speech and language therapy. You can check out the post here. </span><div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://homesweetspeechroom.blogspot.com/2017/01/top-10-repetitive-books-for-speech-and.html"><img border="0" data-original-height="360" data-original-width="640" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOLwWXFI8Ws62GVZinNioy0FQe3DrC-JObiIMD5r6oO3BweYiUIeyqSLBrSXbT0eijd_k1X1Q3OzQ_qTr35PnXER2teW78sFmzUKlhPqcDBS2eJvUuTSjuhNhN7Q82NrJUEZ43Ngk10Q/s400/repetitive+books.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /><div>
<br /></div>

Last summer, I wrote about Dr. Eureka and Fast Flip (see post <a href="http://homesweetspeechroom.blogspot.com/2016/06/fast-flip-and-dr-eureka-new-games-to.html">here</a>). This summer, my clients have been enjoying their newest game called Dr. Beaker. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdsXA5O3VfMpcsU7z1V7Uy7i47gGJk9NVSEl9lB2xseglngvRiSkyqn2DN5enKHJeFy3nDEJh1DtQzIx83eRlTcF3PMpBvhkLr3g9DKCkOI3XicfvBJg9OdBMNnVLtB3HoAyI5ptyLng/s1600/dr.+beaker.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="364" data-original-width="384" height="303" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdsXA5O3VfMpcsU7z1V7Uy7i47gGJk9NVSEl9lB2xseglngvRiSkyqn2DN5enKHJeFy3nDEJh1DtQzIx83eRlTcF3PMpBvhkLr3g9DKCkOI3XicfvBJg9OdBMNnVLtB3HoAyI5ptyLng/s320/dr.+beaker.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here is the description of the game from Blue Orange Games:</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; text-align: justify;">"Stir up excitement in Dr. Beaker's Laboratory! Flip a challenge card and race your opponents to match the formula. Using logic and your stirring rod, move the </span><strong style="background-color: white; text-align: justify;">6 </strong><span style="background-color: white; text-align: justify;">molecules into the right spots. Think ahead - the special rotating platform at the bottom of your beaker only allows the molecules to move one-by-one. Unique game pieces add to the fun in this brainteasing logic race!"</span></span></blockquote>
Here's a video explaining how to play:<br />
<br /></div>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" mozallowfullscreen="" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/220693200" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="640"></iframe>
<br />
<br />
Set-Up:<br />
The game comes with four beakers, four stir sticks, colored balls, and cards. To play, give each person a beaker, stir stick, and two balls of each color.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilWOPB2RnnH1igy_bvArWcKTYGx39x9Byc9cCP3RgAwQ9_IFL07DlPzlAUR6MlFfTL00_arKgzsFRIwFxP51nb3VP_VYuAQnOBXN3UbHk3UOwpcZkCawdht8w762Fkxlkl4EewuBfw9Q/s1600/dr.+beaker+set+up.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="203" data-original-width="384" height="211" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilWOPB2RnnH1igy_bvArWcKTYGx39x9Byc9cCP3RgAwQ9_IFL07DlPzlAUR6MlFfTL00_arKgzsFRIwFxP51nb3VP_VYuAQnOBXN3UbHk3UOwpcZkCawdht8w762Fkxlkl4EewuBfw9Q/s400/dr.+beaker+set+up.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
In Speech and Language Therapy:<br />
For language goals, I modified the instructions slightly. Instead of racing against each other, we have been describing the card to another client. This way, it targets following directions, sequencing, and using descriptive language. <br />
<br />
For articulation and other goals, I use it as a reinforcer. After everyone says their words a given number of times, we can play a round.<br />
<br />
This is also a great game for problem solving, as the kids have to think about the order in which to move the balls around to create a matching arrangement to the card.<br />
<br />
Other uses:<br />
Our occupational therapists have been using it for visual perception and processing speed.<br />
<br />
What my clients have been saying:<br />
-"It is fun! It took me awhile to get used to how to turn the beaker and move the balls, but once I got used to it, it was easy."<br />
-"It was fun, but I think I like Dr. Eureka better. Dr. Eureka was definitely easier. But this one is fun."<br />
-"I enjoyed racing against each other."<br />
-"I like the science theme."<br />
<br />
Bottom Line:<br />
Dr. Beaker is a fun game for my clients to play in my speech room. It is a great game for language goals or to use as a reinforcer. They have been asking to play it over and over again this summer and beginning of the school year. My OT co-workers also reach for it over and over again.<br />
<br />

This included everything from specific speech and language materials to "simple" school supplies. They provide students a list of what school supplies they will need, so why didn't they supply me one? Well today, I'm going to provide that school supply list for you! These are in no particular order. <div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT8T7ed28dBf2s2WUN8b88tgsTb-Tp6kVWM1AOP3tU5duczFQ6YCcq0NM40AASp5Y4q3_lO2HeA9C4dRI3OecjWNhQ9gBpfXQvYEZuYoYluccEpaiuKrveAIrQ0XiTNTpjWNDeQI6laQ/s1600/IMG_3863.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT8T7ed28dBf2s2WUN8b88tgsTb-Tp6kVWM1AOP3tU5duczFQ6YCcq0NM40AASp5Y4q3_lO2HeA9C4dRI3OecjWNhQ9gBpfXQvYEZuYoYluccEpaiuKrveAIrQ0XiTNTpjWNDeQI6laQ/s640/IMG_3863.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. Pens--find a pen that you like. Some prefer roller ball, ink, or flair pens. Find what you like the best and buy a lot. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2. Paper clips--you will be sending a lot of papers to teachers and parents. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3. Binder clips--this will help keep stacks and stacks of paper together. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
4. A good stapler--find one that will staple 40+ pages together. You will NOT regret this. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
5. Envelopes--I send IEPs and other notes home in envelopes for privacy purposes. These are a must. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
6. Velcro--Do I need to explain? You will use this for so many materials! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
7. Laminator and laminating pouches--Again, need I explain? It will make your materials last longer and the quality will likely be higher than the school-provided laminator. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
8. Glue--great for craftivities. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
9. Binder rings--these are great for putting together interactive books and other packets that you want to flip through easily. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
10. Scissors--I cut out a lot of materials from Teachers Pay Teachers. Invest in a good pair for yourself and maybe some smaller ones for your students. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
11. Paper slicer--This saved me so much time instead of having to cut everything out with scissors. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
12. Pencils--Great for when you're working on worksheets or other writing activities. Chances are, the kids will not bring one with them. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
13. Construction paper--great for craftivities or just mixing it up instead of using plain white paper. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
14. Folders--I used one for every kid on my caseload. I kept their data sheets, attendance record, and any project or worksheets in there. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
15. Sheet protectors--You can use these to save papers in a binder or to write on worksheets with dry erase markers.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
16. Dry erase markers--You can use these with sheet protectors or clear envelopes. Others claim you can use them on your iPad! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
17. Sticky tack--If you have concrete walls, this may be your only way to hang things on the wall. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
18. Hot glue--Again, if you have concrete walls, this may be your only way to hang things up. I used it for crafts as well. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
19. Individual white boards--I use these for drills and students keeping their own data throughout sessions. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
20. A fun tape dispenser--I bought one that was a flower. Just adds a little decor to your room without being over the top. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now take this list to the store and happy shopping!! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>

Mine definitely do! I'm constantly looking for ways to change up therapy and keep them engaged. I have a series of apps that I rotate through (on top of the normal drill and drill play activities), but I'm always looking to add more. I was recently introduced to Articulate It Pro from Smarty Ears, and I have to tell you it will be added to that rotation. <br />

One of my clients' favorites is the matching game. They always ask to play it!<br />

As with most Smarty Ears apps, Articulate It Pro collects data for you. It is specific by phoneme, position, and process. It gives you data for correct productions, approximate productions, and incorrect productions.<br />

<br />
Another feature I really like is the certificate option. When a child masters a sound or a sound in a given position, you can print off a certificate for them. My clients love this because it affirms them and makes them feel proud!<br />

Summary:<br />
Articulate It Pro is a great app for busy SLPs. It makes planning and implementing articulation therapy so easy. The multi-player function makes it perfect for group sessions while still targeting each child's individual goals. I really like that I can choose between phonemes, phonological processes, manner of articulation, and number of syllables when setting up the targets for my clients. The games are engaging, and my clients keep coming back for more. </div>

I'm so excited today to talk about another one of their resources, It Takes Two To Talk: A Practical Guide for Parents of Children with Language Delays.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIjTc0nUOEmbyetSHRRpoVel-g65EEsnW3wRKC2KgLcjtjXULRMnuySH8bPo4xucf4132hOadz0Nbg68eLFzntKL7dQGEHzZhuT2vZ_V5yL5-yggqMsGQ2GyO_dxZVyYB2DEorB27YGA/s1600/RULE.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="315" data-original-width="560" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIjTc0nUOEmbyetSHRRpoVel-g65EEsnW3wRKC2KgLcjtjXULRMnuySH8bPo4xucf4132hOadz0Nbg68eLFzntKL7dQGEHzZhuT2vZ_V5yL5-yggqMsGQ2GyO_dxZVyYB2DEorB27YGA/s640/RULE.png" width="640" /></a></div>

<br />
I have so many late talkers on my caseload right now, so I was excited to have a new resource in my library. This book is designed for parents, caregivers, SLPs, and other professionals. It provides information on how to encourage communication and language skills through everyday activities and interactions.<br />
<br />
The following chapters are included:<br />
Chapter 1: Learn More About Your Child's Communication<br />
Chapter 2: Let Your Child Lead<br />
Chapter 3: Follow Your Child's Lead<br />
Chapter 4: Take Turns to Keep the Interaction Going<br />
Chapter 5: Use Routines to SPARK an Interaction<br />
Chapter 6: Add Language to the Interaction<br />
Chapter 7: Let's Play<br />
Chapter 8: Sharing Books<br />
Chapter 9: Moving Forward with Music<br />
<br />
What is fantastic about the book is how informative and on the parents' level it is. It is written in a way for all to understand the strategies. The strategies themselves are extremely practical and are fairly easy for parents to implement. I have taken the strategies, demonstrated them in therapy to the parents, and then they try them at home. <br />
<br />
The book is full of helpful charts that are laid out by the stages of communication. That way, each parent can read exactly what they need to do for his/her child.<br />

<br />
<br />
Here's an example of one of the strategies. They are practical and have pictures to help illustrate them.<br />

<br />
<br />
You can see more example pages from the book <a href="http://www.hanen.org/SiteAssets/Resources/ITTT-EN-5ed-sample-pages.aspx">here</a>.<br />
<br />
In summary, this is a book that I will refer my parents to time and time again. It is practical and on their level. It is full of strategies that we, as SLPs, use all of the time. Now it's put in parent-friendly language for them to fully understand and put into practice at home. <br />

It was an app designed for early communicators to begin to imitate animal sounds. The developers of this app have decided to <b>discontinue</b> First Blubs and focus their efforts on a new app called Speech Blubs. Check out the new one below.<br />
<br />
Let's get really honest and blunt for a second. This is something I think you all need to know up front. Normally, I don't post negative reviews. However, I think it is important for me to post this, as I reviewed their first one and my name has been used in their marketing of this app. <br />
<br />
The app is moving to a subscription-based model, where it will cost $9.99/month after a free trial. That's $119.88 per year! The previous app was a one-time cost of $6.99. I do not agree with this model and think it is extremely overpriced. So that being said, I cannot recommend this app. I don't think it's worth what they are asking, just to be 100% transparent. I find it extremely hard to believe that SLPs and parents would be willing to pay that price for this app.<br />
<br />
So with that being said, here is what the new app is all about. It is again an app designed for early communicators. When you first start, the app will take you through a screener based on the child's age.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq8OupJzgxw2DTXgVBCRiqpcIWUwTR52Ex7Rpf4C9_Ch_Y5u4Kl4DWlrK4bvbQ-tdJbqKxI6PXlzy3xeLeiKi91odLhQnEHhkzlWlAXOqH_ZaRO3EdsOWQgsJ6YuBdUnvOUzlsGXCamw/s1600/IMG_0162.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq8OupJzgxw2DTXgVBCRiqpcIWUwTR52Ex7Rpf4C9_Ch_Y5u4Kl4DWlrK4bvbQ-tdJbqKxI6PXlzy3xeLeiKi91odLhQnEHhkzlWlAXOqH_ZaRO3EdsOWQgsJ6YuBdUnvOUzlsGXCamw/s320/IMG_0162.PNG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Based on the results of the screener, recommendations are made. It says, "Therapist recommends," but I'm not sure who this "therapist" is since the app was not developed by a speech-language pathologist. It is also somewhat misleading, as no app should replace speech and language therapy. I also would like for me, as a therapist, to be able to change the recommendation.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiRYQCUc2BS15lYGlRRxE45eIFFqpH_BIBw-TKc8yYyHsK7Dx_4S4IhTp31IoMcjA4O4eobmitHQAe2yMa4Fd9y4uCZIXCNbAeX04MQETrHkAWvp1kh5BMTSf7O6cubIFXhVZ3WuXaxg/s1600/IMG_0163.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiRYQCUc2BS15lYGlRRxE45eIFFqpH_BIBw-TKc8yYyHsK7Dx_4S4IhTp31IoMcjA4O4eobmitHQAe2yMa4Fd9y4uCZIXCNbAeX04MQETrHkAWvp1kh5BMTSf7O6cubIFXhVZ3WuXaxg/s320/IMG_0163.PNG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The app currently has 3 different areas to practice: Early Sounds, Mouth Gym, First Words. All of them are video modeling with elementary-age kids. Early sounds is very similar to First Blubs in that kids will imitate animal sounds. In Mouth Gym, kids will imitate speech sounds. In First Words, kids will imitate simple words.<br />

<br />
Positives:<br />
-video modeling can be effective<br />
-the use of stickers, animals, and silly hats is engaging<br />
<br />
Things to Update:<br />
-the price to a one-time cost and not a subscription-based model<br />
-to be able to change the time recommendations for practice<br />
-not all models of the words and sounds are ideal--some are held out or the incorrect production of the sound<br />
<br />
So you can decide for yourself if this app is worth it. I would recommend doing a trial first to play with the app. If you choose not to continue, make sure you delete the app and cancel the subscription prior to the 7th day.<br />

It can be hard to find ideas that are relevant to what they deal with on a daily basis. I recently had the opportunity to check out the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/social-detective-intermediate/id1079442478?mt=8&at=1001ln9J">Social Detective Intermediate</a> app, and it has been a great way to address their goals while still being relevant. Check it out below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This app is a companion to the You are a Social Detective book by Michelle Garcia Winner and Pamela Crooke. It is part of the Social Thinking curriculum. The primary focus of this app is to help clients determine the emotions of various people in given scenarios and make "smart guesses" about what they think each person will do next.<br />
<br />
You customize it by allowing each client to choose an avatar that looks somewhat like that or that they want to use.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKazKZogUoR-QOvC2iSRrug2ZdZ8-r2GDbVJdhDu3AZRLu2AVBSxY1fN_EQbjtOvGaTxe4L3fr_II29z_FFXnO7wogukrRlgyxKMnQS9iSMe4uzuPadDnu_5UcHRoSSEv_AsIyBKqe-g/s1600/IMG_0139.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKazKZogUoR-QOvC2iSRrug2ZdZ8-r2GDbVJdhDu3AZRLu2AVBSxY1fN_EQbjtOvGaTxe4L3fr_II29z_FFXnO7wogukrRlgyxKMnQS9iSMe4uzuPadDnu_5UcHRoSSEv_AsIyBKqe-g/s640/IMG_0139.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
In the Notebook section, there are 42 questions about video scenarios. Clients will determine a person's interpretation of the situation, identify his/her feelings, and make a smart guess about what the other person in the situation is going to do next. Clients are given 4 answer choices to help them make the best possible guess. These 42 questions allow for a lot of practice of these skills.<br />
<br />

<br />
In the Flashlight section, clients will practice these skills more. These are more video situations with a similar set up to the notebook session. There are 41 questions in this section, which allows for a lot more practice.<br />
<br />

<br />
Overall, this is a great app companion to You are a Social Detective. We use the Social Thinking curriculum a lot, so it fits right in with what we are already doing and the vocabulary that my clients already know. It is a great way for my clients to practice their social skills and target goals that they are working on with me. It is engaging, and my clients enjoy watching the video scenarios. I like that some of the scenarios show kids doing what's expected, and some show kids doing what's unexpected. It definitely helps to have a background in the Social Thinking so that the vocabulary used doesn't seem strange.<br />
<br />
Some of the scenarios are a little "young" for my older kids, but they are still a good way to practice. I would also love for the video quality to be a little better, but my clients still understood the point of each one and what was happening. <br />
<br />
I would love it if there were a way to have multiple students using it at one time. It saves data for individuals, but I would love a multi-player option. I've been making it work by having one client complete one video situation and then pass it to the next person. <br />
<br />
If you are interested in purchasing this <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/social-detective-intermediate/id1079442478?mt=8&at=1001ln9J">app</a>, it is currently $19.99 in the App Store. You can download it here:<br />

I cannot wait to share my thoughts on that training with you, so be sure to check back soon. </span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white;">Today, I'm partnering with Hanen to bring you a different opportunity. They just released a brand-new e-seminar called </span><span style="background-color: white;"><u>Building Communication: Supporting Parents of Preschoolers with Autism Spectrum Disorder or Social Communication Difficulties.</u> It's a good one that you don't want to miss. </span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">How It Works:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">You purchase access to the seminar online, via the Hanen website. Then, you may view the videos within 30 days. This particular course is 5 hours in length and is broken up into 3 different videos. You may watch it at your speed. This is perfect for busy SLPs who may only have an hour or two at a time. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The Course: </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The course objectives are for participants to: </span></span><br />
<ul style="background-color: white;">
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Explain the importance of including parents and caregivers in early intervention with children with autism or social communication difficulties.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Describe the four stages of communication included in the <em>More Than Words Program.</em></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Identify possible communication goals for each of these communication stages.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Describe three key interaction strategies known to support communication and help children achieve their communication goals.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Establish collaborative discussions with parents and caregivers and empower them to play a primary role.</span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">This course meets all of its objectives listed above. It provides many strategies for SLPs to introduce to parents. Also included are handouts to give to parents. Lisa is a great presenter and held my attention the entire time. She does a fantastic job of explaining background information and the most recent research. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br class="Apple-interchange-newline" />If you've been thinking about participating in a More Than Words training, this is a great starting point to get a little bit of a preview of it. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Sign-Up:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">If you are interested in participating in this course, click below. Five hours of learning for $85 is a good deal! </span><br />

It makes for some easy planning on those busy days, as well. I'm always excited when new ones come out and was excited when the developers of Articulation Essentials contacted me to review their app.<br />
<br />
Articulation Essentials is a brand new articulation app out now! It is very similar to other articulation apps out there, such as Articulation Station or Articulate It. It is very user friendly and contains several fun games for the kids. <br />
<br />
You can watch an overview here:<br />

Under Word-Level 1, you have the choice of two activities: flashcards or matching. With each activity, you can mark the accuracy: correct, almost, or incorrect. The app will track the data for you and save under the child's name.<br />

Under Words-Level 2, you have two more choices of activities: Find the Sound or Sound Hunt. Under Find the Sound, the student will determine if the target sound is in the initial, medial, or final position. This is a great activity for readers, but non-readers may have some difficulty reading the buttons.<br />

Overall, Articulation Essentials is easy to use and provides many opportunities for children to practice their speech sounds. There are multiple levels to help with carryover. Every sound is included for the low price of $9.99. It is perfect for group settings because you can have up to 5 players at once. <br />
<br />
For future updates, I would like to see symbols/images to accompany the position names in the Find the Sound game. This would allow non-readers to participate more easily. <br />
<br />
If you would like to try this app out prior to purchasing it, you can download the lite version:<br />

I'm going to the Hanen Centre's More Than Words program in April, which will be fantastic, I'm sure. Hanen also has an e-seminar called Helping Parents of Late Talkers Use Gestures to Support Expressive Language Development. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzAqkdY-5vuavUSHfiF-re11DuRvETKnvD5o4QO8laJR8Bbkjjrc77JXpv0s4ka6j3OnWKovVp_OdnwZq0PV_vwh0pKtCwjKCvJU8PAb2QMXI0jiQjO7NFpGpMbLjtj5xL37T9pvcyyw/s1600/IMG_2073.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzAqkdY-5vuavUSHfiF-re11DuRvETKnvD5o4QO8laJR8Bbkjjrc77JXpv0s4ka6j3OnWKovVp_OdnwZq0PV_vwh0pKtCwjKCvJU8PAb2QMXI0jiQjO7NFpGpMbLjtj5xL37T9pvcyyw/s640/IMG_2073.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here's the description from The Hanen Centre:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div style="background-color: white; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">"It’s well recognized that children’s gesture use is an important part of their expressive language development. What’s also well known is that children tend to use more gestures when they have parents who do the same. But for parents who are not natural gesturers, it can be difficult to consistently incorporate gestures into interactions with their child.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">This e-Seminar explores what is known about the connection between gesture use and the development of word combinations, and helps you develop a plan of action for supporting parents of Late Talkers to add specific gesture types to their verbal language models to encourage their child’s expressive language development."</span></div>
</blockquote>
This seminar reviews the various types of gestures, the developmental milestones, and then how to teach kids gestures. The course is full of videos to help you learn exactly what she is talking about. The presenter also provides a lot of research/resources throughout.<br />
<br />
Overall, this course was extremely helpful to me. I learned a ton of information that I did not know before. I can take this information and put it into practice today. I will now be looking at gestures more, include them in my therapy, and stress the importance with parents. This course is 2 hours in length and can be done in the comfort of your home on you time. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who is working with late talkers. <br />
<br />
If you are interested in taking this course, you can find more information <a href="http://www.hanen.org/Professional-Development/Online-Training/HPLT.aspx">here</a>. The Hanen Centre is graciously offering 40% off to all Home Sweet Speech room readers now through April 7, 2017. Just enter the code HSSR40. That means you get 0.2 CEUs for only around $50! Super cheap for a great course.<br />

I don't have many apps for younger kids that are also specifically designed for speech therapy. I was excited to see First Blubs, which is designed for those early communicators. <br />
<br />

<a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/first-blubs-speech-delay-therapy-animal-sounds/id1134985535?mt=8&at=1001ln9J">First Blubs</a> is designed to help young children begin to imitate animal noises. This is a goal I work on a lot with my late talkers. The app is designed to use peer models. A child will watch videos of children saying the animal noises.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPUQILhEy8p6449RKAyMaiC0pjxoxeQRLIt7424W1vXvF1z2HbqYQEdXPDQ-19wKv4ZLDA-CTnGorAIFCVzwHcV0gdmUWx6utjQL7rpPGGyeOX_Dl9kHPuSv0NR1gxY9PY0sFyUvmcWA/s1600/image.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPUQILhEy8p6449RKAyMaiC0pjxoxeQRLIt7424W1vXvF1z2HbqYQEdXPDQ-19wKv4ZLDA-CTnGorAIFCVzwHcV0gdmUWx6utjQL7rpPGGyeOX_Dl9kHPuSv0NR1gxY9PY0sFyUvmcWA/s400/image.png" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
Then, the child has a turn to try the sound. They will "become" the animal that they are imitating.<br />

Overall, <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/first-blubs-speech-delay-therapy-animal-sounds/id1134985535?mt=8&at=1001ln9J">First Blubs </a>is a very simple app to use. It is engaging for young children. My clients loved the ability to turn the camera around onto them and "become" the animal they were imitating. It is a fun, new way to practice one of their goals.<br />
<br />
In future updates, I would love for there to be a multi-user function that would save the stickers that each child has completed. Additionally, not all of the sounds are true English sounds, especially the vowels. I would really like to see accurate models of the sounds.<br />
<br />

A couple of my clients have been having some difficulty with pronouns recently. All of them are motivated by the iPad, so I was excited when I found out there was an app to target pronouns! Check it out below. Affiliate links may be included for your convenience. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pronouns-with-splingo/id665741415?mt=8&at=1001ln9J"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheluQymrhYDvINuf1646dZLsdq1dtueVHv0j-UYa6UPLdXnvfMz1LYZfvLXdqnkWuWGoKSHnhS1zZw0yQ2oNtEdAo-AhY4ZXLQdlnTyzfpD4S2upgFdYYgE6FZylt9XaVhykjVuZzu1Q/s640/Slide1.png" width="640" /></a></div>
The app is designed to teach the following pronouns: we, I, they, he, she, him, her, them, me, us, hers, his, theirs, mine, and ours. To get started, select which pronouns you would like to target.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE8I9jbn0cct8nb4W-LQlpN-K0GkRuDfiM1QdPuUU2FFKbnqUIeJqsIesMh_jvocfPiF2PUHLDWOHxM8hfYMRuGI33iqNj78O-yr7hw4SIJDNhPmsNMo4P6Fr2aw6ls005-Kx18R72pQ/s1600/IMG_0081.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE8I9jbn0cct8nb4W-LQlpN-K0GkRuDfiM1QdPuUU2FFKbnqUIeJqsIesMh_jvocfPiF2PUHLDWOHxM8hfYMRuGI33iqNj78O-yr7hw4SIJDNhPmsNMo4P6Fr2aw6ls005-Kx18R72pQ/s640/IMG_0081.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Then, the app will pop up an object and a sentence, directing the child where to put the object. <br />

Overall, <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pronouns-with-splingo/id665741415?mt=8&at=1001ln9J">Pronouns with Splingo</a> is a good app to get started with targeting pronouns as well as working on following simple directions. My clients enjoy playing with Splingo again and liked the sticker reinforcer. It is easy to customize and start using immediately. In future updates, I would love to see a way for the app to take data.<br />

Splingo's Language Universe is a new-to-me app that I have been checking out recently. Affiliate links have been included for your convenience. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
The app is designed to increase a child's listening and receptive language skills. It specifically targets following directions with a fun space theme. <br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">To start, choose your level. There are four levels within this app. Here's how the creators of the app explained them: </span><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">"<span style="background-color: white;">A guide to the levels:</span></span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white;">•Level 1 -contains instructions of 1 main word and is suitable for children at a developmental level of about 18 months onwards, e.g. “find the apple”</span></span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white;">•Level 2 - contains instructions of 2 main words and is suitable for children at a developmental level of about 2-3 years, e.g. “find the red apple”</span></span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white;">•Level 3 - contains instructions of 3 main words and is suitable for children at a developmental level of about 3- 4 years and upwards, e.g. “find the big red apple”</span></span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white;">•Level 4 - contains instructions of 4 main words and is suitable for children at a developmental level of about 4 years and upwards, e.g. “give the big red apple to the boy”"</span></span></blockquote>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx3zHp1NLnBSYxjU5A-K9HDWsCCCCkmG7y0mYfGWjOCUcmdVcs2HcdOcqCD3WfGor6vBpCWqAKKZGPj20NM5rkZBfP7Q9N-_Gc8_qd8Vb_UlNI_nb892t6iN5yThUNiiSbaD7FxhkiVA/s1600/IMG_0059.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx3zHp1NLnBSYxjU5A-K9HDWsCCCCkmG7y0mYfGWjOCUcmdVcs2HcdOcqCD3WfGor6vBpCWqAKKZGPj20NM5rkZBfP7Q9N-_Gc8_qd8Vb_UlNI_nb892t6iN5yThUNiiSbaD7FxhkiVA/s640/IMG_0059.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The app will then take the children through a series of directions to follow. Here's an example:</span></div>

You cannot let them burden your heart</i>. As a compassionate, "helper" type personality, this has been very difficult for me at times. I've learned over the past couple of years that there is a difference between compassion and burdening your heart. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcl2sElG7nzLv5wqgn7nwP2zGPM5JnlfWKegKMJL2QQ5QI34F321EpCguGoh12-BTSrz-UpND01xas6Sj4HBe-7_wAbsnC-bAae6sNm77x9cnZr4AXdZmuy5rZM6Y_76aMAuX8uEKSSg/s1600/IMG_1483.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcl2sElG7nzLv5wqgn7nwP2zGPM5JnlfWKegKMJL2QQ5QI34F321EpCguGoh12-BTSrz-UpND01xas6Sj4HBe-7_wAbsnC-bAae6sNm77x9cnZr4AXdZmuy5rZM6Y_76aMAuX8uEKSSg/s640/IMG_1483.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Let me be clear, I do NOT mean that any child is a burden. Sometimes, their stories just weigh heavy on my heart. Since we see them on a regular basis (sometimes more than once per week), the kids build up a trust with us. They tend to start opening up to us. We then hear the stories about how their parents are struggling in their marriage. We hear stories about how one of their family members is in jail. We hear stories about how they don't have much food at home. We hear stories about how this is their Xth number of school this year alone. Then, I start to want to help them all. Maybe this is what my professor was warning us about. <br />
<br />
I think it's natural. As I mentioned, I am a helper by nature and probably went into a helping profession for that reason. I have to remember that I am helping them. I am helping them with their speech, language, social skills, fluency, and more. I am helping them by making them feel safe and loved in my speech room. I am helping them by approaching them gently and sincerely. I am helping them by providing the best services I can for them. I am helping them by fighting for appropriate services in their IEP meetings or when writing letters of medical necessity.<br />
<br />
This is easier said than done, of course. So, there are some things that I can do to help it not be a weight on my heart:<br />
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Journal. I write down my thoughts down. Sometimes they immediately go into the shredder, fire, or recycling. It helps to get your thoughts out, but there is also an important step of letting them go. </li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Do some small things to help, but also acknowledge that you cannot fix the whole situation. For example, if a child comes into your room and is always hungry, have a snack option available for all students. Always smile at them. Give them high-fives. Give them hugs when they ask and when is appropriate. </li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Refer them to different resources or professionals, as appropriate. </li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Find someone to talk it out with. Be careful about HIPAA and FERPA here, of course. Sometimes it just helps to vent and let your burdens out to another. Not to burden them, of course, but just to get you thoughts out (see #1). </li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Last, but certainly not least,</span></b><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>PRAY. This is probably the most important one. I pray for my clients every day. Prayers for their situations. Prayers for peace. Prayers for their hearts. I know that I cannot do things on my own for my own life. I am in desperate need of His love. So how can I expect to be able to do it for them. I can't. They need Him as much as I do. </li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
Remember, you are helping them, probably in more ways than you realize. Sometimes those things may go unnoticed, but I'm acknowledging them today for you. So carry on, compassionate one. Rest easy and allow your burden to be light.<br />
<br />
