Let's Talk About Books: Week 3 {linky party}

This week, I would like to talk about a book by a new favorite author- Maria Dismondy!  The title of this week's book is Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun: Having the Courage to Be Who You Are.

Story (from Amazon):

How can Ralph be so mean? Lucy is one of a kind and Ralph loves to point that out. Lucy's defining moment comes when Ralph truly needs help. Because she knows what she stands for, Lucy has the courage to make a good choice. This charming story empowers children to always do the right thing and be proud of themselves, even when they are faced with someone as challenging as Ralph.

Application:
This is a great book to have in our speech rooms because it has such a great message.  The main character of the story knows she has different interests than others in the book, which can make her feel left out.  I love that the message helps students understand that it is important to be nice to others even when they are mean and to always do the right thing.  This is a message for everyone, but I think our students working social skills will especially benefit from this book.  It can lead to great discussions about friendship, doing the right thing, and being an includer.

For articulation, there are a lot of /s/ sounds...Lucy, spaghetti, school, choice

For language, you can do many whole language activities, story retell, vocabulary, WH questions, and more!

Bottom Line:
I would recommend this book to anyone.  I am so glad I was finally able to get this book, and I look forward to buying more from Maria Dismondy!
